Taking care of the entirety of your internal IT infrastructure can be a considerable drain on your human resources as well your budget. The costs of handling everything in-house can be considerably higher than if you outsource some or all of it to a qualified external vendor.
However, there may be some concerns by management that outsourcing something as critical to operations as IT may be unwise. The loss of “control” can be unnerving to some executives, as well as the internal IT staff. So why does it make sense to consider outsource IT services to a Managed Service Provider (MSP)?
One of the ongoing debates in management theory over the decades has focused on the issues of outsourcing specific tasks. Should an organization handle all the duties necessary to run the entire operation in-house, or should some processes and tasks be outsourced?
Management theory and real-life practitioners continue to struggle with determining what is the best combination of outsourcing and in-house operation. However, just trying the find the optimal mix begs the question: why is outsourcing some of a business’ activities better for quality output and the bottom line?
There are a least three good reasons why a business may look to move certain operations to an external provider.
- Efficiencies: Because an external provider is deeply skilled in one area, they can focus more effectively to provide services more efficiently and with better quality. Building up that kind of knowledge depth within the organization takes time and may not actually be feasible given staffing restrictions.
- Distracting from core competencies: A business needs to focus on its key goals. Some operational and other duties, however critical they are to the organization, represent skill sets that distract management from its primary business focus. This can be particularly true where you have operational needs that require deep expertise that fall outside of the business’s core competency
- Economies of scale: As you begin producing more units of a product or service, the costs of the input needed to create that product or service drop. We call that concept ‘economies of scale.’ For a business that has a limited need for a certain skill set, say IT support or building maintenance, they are better off moving such tasks to an outside vendor. Because an external provider offers those services to a variety of clients, the vendor can spread the infrastructure and fixed costs of providing those services across the entire platform of clients.
